Anyone that wishes to communicate effectively with their subconscious mind can interpret dreams by themselves. Our subconscious mind communicates with us through dreams. When we are interested in understanding the subconscious communication and especially when we desire to solve a problem, an on-going issue or a challenge, what a wonderful way to use by ourselves, simply to interpret dreams. Years ago I acquired some books that had lists of symbols in them and I thought that I was learning how to interpret dreams correctly but when I attended my Hypnotherapy collage as well as my NLP training, I discovered that what I believed was the right way to interpret dreams was actually not as conducive as I desired it to be. I wanted to interpret dream in an effective way and I also wanted my clients to be able to interpret dreams on their own.
The main distinction between books that will teach you how to interpret dreams vs. knowing how to interpret dreams by yourself without any books is that the symbols that a book suggest may not mean the same thing to you in your internal world. You may laugh about what I am going to share with you and if you do, be my guest, it is funny.
I grew up in Israel, in a small town north of Haifa. Even though it was a pretty laid back place, I did need to watch it on the street as cars were going back and forth. Every now and then I’d travel with my parent to visit friends who lived in the “Kibbutz”. A “Kibbutz” is a form of Israeli living in a collective community that used to be traditionally based on agriculture.
I loved going visit in the kibbutz because I could run freely on the green grass, didn’t need to worry about anything. I simply felt FREE!
Now, in many of the kibbutzim (plural for “kibbutz”) they used to raise cows. And you know what smell goes hand by hand with cows – that’s right, the smell of manure.
So to me, the moment I smell the “fragrance” of manure I feel like I am free. That means that in my book of symbols manure= freedom.
Now if you would dream about manure – for you it may represent – something is stinking, discuss or the need to be careful. If I dream about manure, I may get a message, that this is the right place for me to be, or the decision I’m about to make will allow me to be happier.
As funny as it may sound, it absolutely vital to be aware of this component, when you are about to interpret dreams. No one can argue with what something symbolizes to you. It’s not the same for everyone, that’s why books can be misleading.
How To Prepare To Interpret Dreams:
1. Have a notebook and a pen next to your bed side so you can write your dream as soon as you wake up. You know that dreams tend to vanish as the day progresses. Having your writing kit next to you will make it easy to write the dream.
2. Have a recording device next to your bed side. If it’s easier for you to speak your dream into the recorder vs. writing it down, that go for it. Personally, it’s easier for me to write then speak in the morning, but that is really a personal decision. Just make sure that you are in fact looking at the recorder and that you did in fact hit the “record” button. You don’t want to discover later that, you spoke your dream but the recorder didn’t record.
Here Are The 7 Steps To
Interpret Dreams Effectively:
Now that you have your dream in front of you, you may
want to designate 10-15 minutes of your time
(depends on the length of the dream) and follow the steps below:
Step number 1:
In your dream notebook (or on a separate letter size paper) create a table with four columns that looks like this:
At the top of the first column (on the left) write the words: “Dream’s Symbols”
At the top of the second column write the words: “Context of Life”
At the top of the third column write the words: “Meaning”
At the top of the forth column write the words: “Contextual Meaning”
Summary of step no. 1:
Create a table with four columns.
Step number 2:
Extract from your dream ALL the symbols and write them on the left column. Each symbol in a row.
Let me give you and example:
Lets say you dreamed that you were sailing by yourself on a boat. It was night time and you could see the reflection of the moon in the ocean. It was very quiet. The light of the moon made it a bright night. As you were lying down in the boat, awake, looking at the sky full of stars, you suddenly felt that the boat bumped into something and got stuck. You were curious to know what happened, but for some reason you couldn’t move and then you woke up.
As you see, I underlined and colored all the symbols in red.
These symbols will be now written in your first column one below the other.
Summary of step no. 2:
Make a list of all the symbols in your dreams.
Step number 3:
Now you want to choose the context of life to interpret the dream. For example: If you want to resolve something in your career, or finances, relationships or health, it can be a very specific issue like an argument with a neighbor or something that is more general like where are you heading next in life.
The reason that you can interpret dreams, any dream, in any context of your life is because dreams are holographic in nature. So that means that there isn’t necessarily time and space for these dreams. You may interpret a repetitive dream that you have from childhood that you keep on dreaming and interpret it for an issue that you are currently facing. Or you may take THE SAME DREAM interpret it in one area of life and use the same dream to interpret it in another area of life.
Summary of step no. 3:
So just write down in the second column the context of life you choose the interpret your dream in.
Step number 4:
So now that you decided the context of interpretation, you want to give each symbol a meaning. The question to ask yourself is: “What does this (the symbol) mean to me?”
When you interpret dreams – the key to you success with this part is your INTUITION. Just trust your intuition! It’s there, it’s always there, you may not always be conscious of it, but it’s there. The best strategy is to answer the questions quickly, that way you will bypass your unconscious mind, you wouldn’t go too much into your thinking left brain that will try to analyze it prematurely.
So in this example:
What’s the meaning of boat for you? Let’s say boat=vehicle
What’s the meaning of ocean for you? Let’s say ocean=infinite
What’s the meaning of moon for you? Let’s say moon=brightness
What’s the meaning of not being able to move for you? Let’s say not being able to move =helpless
and so forth…
Summary of step no. 4:
“What does this (the symbol) mean to me?”
Step number 5:
Now we are heading for the fourth and final column where you will ask yourself:
“What does A GIVEN SYMBOL MEANING means TO ME in the CONTEXT I CHOSE to interpret my dream?”. So If we are taking some of the symbols that we gave meaning to earlier, which are vehicle, infinite, brightness and helpless, and we are choosing to interpret the dream in the context of intimate relationships, we will ask:
“What do these words mean to you in the context of your intimate relationship?
In our example:
What’s the meaning of vehicle means to you in the context of your choice?
What’s the meaning of infinite to you in the context of your choice?
What’s the meaning of brightness to you in the context of your choice?
What’s the meaning of helpless to you in the context of your choice?
and so forth…
And the answers may be:
vehicle = communication
infinite = possibilities
brightness = hope
helpless = my mom
Summary of step no. 5:
Ask yourself: “What does that mean to me in the context of my choice?" and simply write down what comes up for you.
Step number 6:
Now it’s time to make sense of the information you gathered. On a separated page in your notebook you connect the pieces that came up, in a way you simply create the story that is relevant to your situation. You can look at it as if you have found a story that was written in ink. Some of the words are missing and some exist. The existing words are the one you have from your contextual meaning and the missing ones…well…you need to plug them in. You are the only one who knows your situation best.
So it may look like this: “In the context of my intimate relationship (which I currently don’t have one), the key is COMMUNICATION. This new developed skill/ability/focus will open new POSSIBILITIES for me. Now as I can clearly see the key (communication), I have more HOPE that I will find the companion I desire to have. I see how in the past I took on MY MOM’s behavior, but I am beyond that and I can see how my outcome depends on what I’ll do from now on and not on continuing to model my mom.
Summary of step no. 6:
Connect the dots and create the story.
Step number 7:
Last step is the ACTION STEP. You just found out what your subconscious mind was trying to communicate with you. So there must be something to do next so you can move forward. In our example the key message was COMMUNICATION. So there are a few options here. The action step for this person may be:
1. To start communicating more.
2. Maybe to close some lose ends from a previous intimate relationship so they can stop being held back from something they needed to say,
3. When dating new women/men, to communicate more openly and say what they wish to say,
4. To find ways to possibly communicate more compassionately (if this person used to say hurtful things in the past).
The person in this example knows exactly in which direction they need to turn in order to strengthen or improve their communication, and when you will interpret dreams that are yours, you will also know what you need to do.
The key is to DO IT!! Because if you don’t, your subconscious mind will provide you with more dreams to help you. You’ve got to remember that you still have a conscious mind. We need both conscious and subconscious mind. The conscious mind is the one that will help you to make decisions and take actions. And if you get stuck, either continue working with tools that you are acquiring to better your life or reach out and as for guidance.
Just so you know, you cannot be wrong because if you made a “mis-take” your subconscious mind will process your “mis-take” throughout your dreams the next night and will vent out whatever is not serving you.
Summary of step no. 7:
Decide on the action you will take and take it ASAP.
Eventually, you will have something that looks like this table below, and then step 6 and step 7 as shown below:
To view this table in a full page size, right click on the table and
choose the "view image" option or click here.
Step 6: Connecting the dots and creating the story
“In the context of my intimate relationship (which I currently don’t have one), I need to be more PRESENT. An important factor to notice is COMMUNICATION. As I am becoming more PRESENT and attuned to my needs, which one of them is TAKING TIME OFF from the relationship so there is MORE FUN in the relationship. Then the possibility for HARMONY and KINDNESS will be there and then I CAN GET WHAT I WANT. It’s time to RELEASE PAST HURTS, I am OPEN TO CHANGE my ways of being, communicating, behaving in relationships. Now I can clearly see and ACCEPT MY FAULTS. There is no need to blame the other side anymore, I get it. I can GET MARRIED! Even though I have been CONFUSED AT TIMES and I desire so much to let go of SINGLEHOOD and GET MARRIED to someone that I LOVE and desire to CUDDLE with, a relationship where there is HARMONY, KINDNESS and healthy communication, I can now see how for a long time I modeled MY MOM. But now, after these messages that came to me from deep within my subconscious mind through my dream, I can totally see where are am, and how I got here. I have the clarity I needed to know what to do next.
Step 7: Decide on the action you will take and take it ASAP.
The person in this example is writing: "My next steps are:
To notice in my daily life when I’m not as present as I could be.
To Get rid of sugary starchy foods and reduce caffeine as I know they throw me off focus.
When I am with other people, listen to them and to myself as well. Especially my needs. If I need to make a phone call or leave, in the past, I just stayed and felt bad and guilty, felt like I’m not responsible. But now I will become more assertive and I will say: “Please excuse me, I have an appointment that I’d like to be on time to and I must leave”.
I also need to release hurts on a deeper level and I will look for an audio that will help me release past hurts."
