Having a strong desire to be, do, or have something that you really want is a wonderful thing. It’s the driving force that has the full potential in it to be, do, or have what we want.
We all experience that desire and sometimes, when we desire that “thing” for a long time and do not get it, the desire may become mixed with frustration, resentment, and even bitterness. Sometimes we may even feel defeated. From that point on, it seems that the climb back up to “going after your dreams” is more challenging.
When that happens to us, instead of dwelling on what is not working, how we cannot be, do, or have what we want; it is best to start following the yellow brick road.
Each of us has built our own yellow brick road. It’s our emotions. When we notice how we feel, we can help ourselves to shift our feelings from being unhappy to feeling good, we are actively stepping back onto the road to happiness.
There are three main reasons why you do not want to feel unhappy feelings for a long period of time:
It Just Doesn’t Feel Good In The Moment.
You are unhappy, you may even be depressed, feeling stuck, lose direction, and hope. Not a great way to go through this life’s journey, right?
You Weaken Your Immune System Which Weakens Your Physical Body And May Create Illness In The Body.
You don’t feel good physically. You start to develop different symptoms, like fatigue, headaches, and pain here and there. So on top of the fact that you are not getting to enjoy your desires, you also don’t feel well and that becomes a vicious cycle.
You Attract More Moments Where You Feel The Same.
You are feeding the cycle; you are looping and spinning in it over and over again. Without realizing it, you live in this bubble and all you get is the same old same again and again.
Maybe all this is not completely news to you and if it’s not, CONGRATULATIONS!! You are now hearing it for the hundredth time and IT IS TIME for you to SNAP out of the bubble.
How? Shift your emotional state!
There are many great techniques to do that.
I’ll share with you a great and simple one that works so well for me. Where instead of letting my emotions run all over the place and do whatever they want to do, whenever they want to do it, I am deciding how to contain that specific emotion, to contain it in time and space.
So let’s say it's frustration. I decide ACTIVELY how long I’d like to be frustrated and I am actively frustrated for that time period. It can be for 5 or 10 minutes. I normally sit like I do when I meditate, but you don’t have to. I then bring up the frustration by naming the things I am frustrated about. I breathe and think about them. When the timer goes off, I’m done and I am available to continue with my day without needing to carry with me so much frustration.
If you are not able to sit quietly when you recognize an emotion you wish to place in a time-space container, you can connect the time-space container to an activity. So if you are about to take a shower, you say to yourself: “By the time I’m done with the shower, I have processed this frustration, resentment, guilt, whichever it is, and I am done.”
Your emotions are the key to the kingdom of your desires. When you are able consistently to shift the ones that don’t feel so great to ones that do, you will be more hopeful, motivated, and inspired to pursue your desires.
